the Right Angler
In 1990, the scientific community accepted the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) initial assessment that global temperatures had “fluctuated drastically” over the past millennium with a Medieval Warming Period followed by the Little Ice Age followed again by a period of warming. These were natural shifts and so it seemed logical that having left the Little Ice Age, we would now experience a natural period of warming. As time progressed, however, this view did not jibe with the corrupt and ambitious who for a variety of selfish reasons were determined to blame any warming on humans, the industrial revolution and increased CO2 levels.
In 1995, an email hit the computer of Dr. David Deming, University of Oklahoma geophysicist. It was “an astonishing email from a major researcher in the area of climate change”. It read: “we have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period.”
A few years earlier, climate scientist Stephen Schneider told Discover magazine: “to capture public imagination, we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention of any doubts one might have. Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.”
In 2001, the IPCC issued its Third Assessment Report (TAR). The lead author was Stephen Schneider. Located in the Summary for Policy Makers section was a reconstruction of the original theory that in fact had eliminated the Medieval Warming Period. You may recognize the “hockey stick” shape of this reconstruction. It was derived from a 1998 paper from Michael E. Mann, Raymond S. Bradley and Malcom K. Hughes (MBH98). This Hockey Stick graph became the symbol of the correlation between man, his industrial activity, the increased CO2 that results and global warming. Al Gore featured the Hockey Stick prominently in his schlockumentary: An Inconvenient Truth. Without the Medieval Warming Period, it shows a flat temperature history for 1900 years until this past century when there is a sudden and steep increase (hence the Hockey Stick).
The world ran with it and the rest is history.
Thankfully, two Canadians, statistician Stephen McIntyre and economist Ross McKitrick audited Mann’s work. The audit was made difficult by Mann’s refusal to provide his data, method and source code. Despite this, McIntyre was able to expose the flaws in the Hockey Stick theory. They proved that it was the result of “severe data defects and flawed calculations.”
There was, of course, a coordinated effort to refute this audit. Keith Briffa of Britain’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) came to the rescue. His temperature graphs, derived from Yamal, Russia tree ring data, were heavily cited by the IPCC as supporting the Hockey Stick theory. Much debate ensued, but Briffa’s work seemed legitimate.
So, McIntyre attempted to audit Briffa’s work but was stonewalled. Briffa refused to release his tree ring measurement data. This went on for some time. Last year, however, Briffa slipped up. He published his data in a journal that adheres to strict data archiving rules. McIntyre convinced one of the editors to help get the data released and late last month, Briffa’s data was finally published at CRU. McIntyre finished his analysis of the data in October and proved that Briffa had “cherry picked and manipulated data, intentionally omitting records not friendly to their position. In fact, when Briffa’s hand-selected figures were replaced by a broader dataset for the same Polar Ural region, the Hockey-Stick suddenly disappeared, revealing no significant trend in the 20th century whatsoever!”
It can be safely now be said, that with his fraudulent Hockey Stick graph, there was never man-caused global warming, just Mann-caused global warming.
Flash forward to November 2009: Climategate. Britain’s CRU email server was hacked and over 1000 emails were stolen. These emails have been released and have exposed Phil Jones, the head of the CRU, as a co-conspirator in the greatest hoax the world has ever seen.
Perhaps the most damning email is this one written to Hockey-Stick creators Michael Mann, Raymond Bradley and Malcom Hughes: “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd (sic) from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the declines.” You’ve probably guessed that the “Keith” referred to in the email is none other than Keith Briffa. It's now official. The founding fathers of man-caused global warming used “tricks” to “hide the declines” in temperature.
In addition to this, there are emails detailing directions to delete research that may expose the truth and instructions to ignore the Freedom of Information Act requests that plagued them. Emails such as: “Can you delete any emails that you may have had with Keith regarding AR4?” and “I’m getting hassled by a couple of people to release the CRU station temperature data. Don’t tell any of you three tell anybody that the UK has a Freedom of Information Act” reveal the extent of their deception. Stephen McIntyre is referred to several times directly: “I can’t see either of his papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow—even if we have to redefine what the peer review literature is!” It is important to note that the sacred peer review process is often cited in defense of their work. The truth is that they’ve manipulated the peer review process by hiding data and keeping their work from those who would disagree.
Lastly, Jones reveals in this email a twisted side to himself: “If anything, I would like to see the climate change happen, so the science could be proved right, regardless of the consequences. This isn’t being political, it is being selfish.” Read that again. Regardless of the consequences?
These are the corrupt men that the IPCC and politicians have used to push man-caused Global Warming on all of us. Their work is based on manipulated data, fraudulent computer models and corrupt peer reviews. The foundation for their theory is the Hockey Stick graph which has been proven to be a fraud. All they can do now is lie, manipulate and conceal.
Thankfully, there are men like Stephen McIntyre who doggedly pursue the truth. Thankfully, these emails were exposed.
Many question remain: Why did this happen? Who has benefited? What is the end game? Stay tuned for next week’s exciting conclusion…
